Morocco has withdrawn as host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), just 60 days before the tournament is scheduled to kick off on March 17.
The development follows ongoing fallout from the chaotic 2025 men’s Africa Cup of Nations final, which prompted renewed scrutiny of Morocco’s hosting arrangements.
Morocco previously hosted WAFCON in 2022 and 2024 and was set to host the tournament again in 2026, which would have made it the first country to stage the women’s competition three consecutive times.
However, South Africa has clarified that no formal decision has yet been taken to relocate the tournament.
In a media statement dated 1 February 2026, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, said the country has merely expressed its willingness to support the Confederation of African Football (CAF) should alternative hosting arrangements be required.
“At this stage, no formal decision has been made to relocate the tournament, and Morocco remains the officially designated host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” the statement said.
The ministry stressed that any potential hosting by South Africa would be subject to CAF’s formal confirmation, Cabinet approval, verification of host cities, stadium availability, accommodation and transport capacity, as well as the conclusion of government guarantees and operational agreements.
It added that remarks by Deputy Minister Peace Mabe reflected South Africa’s long-standing support for African football and its confidence in hosting major international sporting events, but did not amount to a formal assumption of hosting responsibilities.
CAF is expected to announce a final decision once consultations and formal processes are concluded.
