The National Assembly has approved the nomination of five candidates for appointment as members of the newly instituted National Human Rights Commission.

Moving the motion for approval at the Assembly, Samba Jallow, the minority leader and member of the Public Appointment Standing Committee, said the committee in approving the candidates took into consideration the statutory requirements provided under the Human Rights Commission Act of 2017, which empowers the president to make appointments for members of the commission “who shall be of high morals and proven integrity in human rights.”

According to Honourable Jallow the Public Appointment Committee was satisfied with the track records of the candidates in the field of human rights advocacy.

The appointed members are Emmanuel Daniel Joof, Jainaba Johm, Njundu Drammeh, Imam Alhaji Baba Muhtarr Leigh and Dr Agnes Adama Campbell nee Kallay.

The National Assembly passed the National Human Rights Commission Act in 2017. The commission is tasked with enhancing the promotion and protection of human rights in The Gambia.
