The National Democratic Party (NDP) has criticized the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over its ongoing party registration process, alleging unfair treatment and what it described as a “dramatic narrative” presented to the public.

In a press statement, the party said it was invited to a meeting at the IEC conference hall, where officials raised concerns about aspects of its registration application.

According to the NDP, the Commission objected to certain terminologies used in the party’s constitution, reportedly describing them as “Ghanaian terms” and therefore unacceptable.

The party further disclosed that out of 11,796 voter cards submitted as part of its application, 3,355 were rejected due to inconsistencies.

The IEC subsequently requested that the NDP provide additional valid voter cards to make up for the shortfall.

The NDP expressed concern over what it characterised as the Commission’s public handling of the matter, arguing that administrative issues should be addressed through direct engagement rather than framed in a manner that could portray affected parties negatively.

“The commission’s role is to uphold fairness, transparency, and equal treatment of all political actors,” the statement said, adding that regulatory consistency is essential for maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

The party also questioned whether the National People’s Party (NPP) was subjected to similar scrutiny during its own registration, stressing that equal treatment under the law is fundamental to democracy.

Reaffirming its commitment to due process, the NDP said it remains prepared to comply with all lawful requirements set by the Commission but reserves the right to demand transparency and accountability in matters affecting its political participation.

The party concluded by urging the IEC to engage all stakeholders professionally and in line with democratic best practices and principles of natural justice.
