The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has launched a bid to woo Mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda, following his dramatic withdrawal from the United Democratic Party (UDP) flagbearer race and resignation as National Organising Secretary.
Talib Bensouda, long seen as a political threat to President Adama Barrow, is now reportedly being courted by the ruling party.
Since announcing his decision on Saturday, several key figures within the NPP have intensified efforts to bring the young politician into their fold.
One of the party’s senior officials, Lamin K. Saidy, adviser to President Barrow, urged Talib to consider joining the NPP.
He said: “The natural space for Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda is the NPP. This is an opportune moment for him to build a political journey filled with hope. UDP is not for young people with political ambition. Those around Talib should advise him to join the NPP. This, in my view, is not a voluntary decision. Talib was harassed and insulted, and his only crime was to seek a political position against Darboe, the owner of the party.”
Following Saidy’s call, the NPP’s Diaspora Public Relations Officer, Ousman Keita, also extended an invitation.
He wrote: “I respectfully reach out to personally invite you to consider joining the National People’s Party (NPP), a movement that upholds the values of inclusivity, equality, and progress for all Gambians. Your leadership and vision have inspired many, and we believe your principles align well with the NPP’s commitment to national unity and development.
“The party welcomes all voices equally, and your presence would be a valued addition as we work together to build a brighter future. I urge you not to let narrow political interests limit your potential or jeopardise your promising career. The future of The Gambia needs leaders who rise above partisan divides in service of the greater good.”
