Lands and Religious Affairs Minister Hamat Bah has sent shockwaves through the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) after warning supporters that Kanifing Mayor Talib Bensouda’s Unite for Movement poses the biggest danger to their political dominance.

Addressing cheering crowds at an NPP rally in Sukuta, Bah said the party must wake up and confront what he described as a growing political force.

“There are two things happening in this country: an elder avoiding shame and a young man chasing victory,” he said.

“We are watching Talib Bensouda’s movement closely, it is our biggest threat and danger, and we will fight them head-on.”

His fiery remarks drew mixed reactions across the political landscape. Critics and commentators described his words as deeply concerning, warning that such rhetoric could stir tension and hate against Bensouda’s followers.

Bah, however, doubled down, calling on NPP supporters and alliance partners to start mobilising immediately ahead of the 2026 elections.

He urged the party’s regional officials to reach every corner of the country, engage communities, and ensure every eligible Gambian registers to vote.

He also appealed to village heads to be fair in granting voting rights, warning that no Gambian should be denied their democratic entitlement.

The Unite for Movement, launched only a month ago, has already drawn national attention with its promise of clean governance and youth empowerment.
