Senegal’s national team coach, Pape Thiaw, who led the team to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations, has broken his silence on the controversial incident during the final that sparked widespread debate.

“I only tried to protect my players against injustice. What some may see as a breach of rules is nothing more than an emotional reaction to the situation’s lack of fairness,” Thiaw told Libération on Thursday, January 22.

He added, “I apologize if I offended anyone, but football lovers will understand that emotion is an integral part of this sport.”

Thiaw also expressed his deep connection to Senegal, saying, “My heart, my soul, my mind are anchored in this beautiful country that has given me everything, and for it, I would do the impossible.”

The comments come as the football community continues to debate the actions during the final, with supporters defending Thiaw’s passion while critics question the methods used.
