The Police Anti-Crime Unit Sub-Base in Barra has intercepted 30 persons during a targeted morning operation in the North Bank Region aimed at curbing irregular migration and related unlawful activities.

The operation, conducted on Saturday, 21 February 2026, was carried out in collaboration with the Gambia Immigration Department following intelligence reports of suspicious movements in the Niumi Lamin area.

Police said several individuals fled upon the arrival of officers, but 30 suspects were apprehended and taken to Essau Model Police Station for screening and verification.

Preliminary checks indicate that those intercepted include nationals from The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and Côte d’Ivoire.

Individuals confirmed as migrants were handed over to the Gambia Immigration Department in Barra for administrative action in line with immigration laws.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend suspected agents or facilitators behind the attempted migration.

The police said the operation forms part of sustained intelligence-led efforts to disrupt irregular migration networks, strengthen border security and protect vulnerable persons from dangerous journeys.

Authorities also commended community cooperation in the North Bank Region and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
