
The Anti-Crime Unit Sub-Base in Barra, North Bank Region has intercepted nine persons during a targeted operation aimed at curbing irregular migration and related unlawful activities.
The intelligence-led operation, conducted on February 23, 2026, was spearheaded by Inspector RSM M. Corr following credible information about a group of individuals allegedly gathering at a compound in Essau Sami under circumstances suspected to be linked to irregular migration attempts.
According to police sources, officers moved swiftly to the identified location.
Upon their arrival, several individuals reportedly fled the scene, while nine others were apprehended and transported to Essau Model Police Station for screening and verification.
Preliminary findings indicate that those intercepted include nationals from West African countries, notably Guinea Conakry and Senegal.
Police confirmed that all nine individuals have undergone verification procedures and have been identified as migrants.
They are currently in temporary custody at Essau Model Police Station pending formal handover to the Gambia Immigration Department in Barra for further administrative processing in line with immigration laws.
Authorities have disclosed that investigations are ongoing to track down suspected agents or facilitators believed to be organizing or aiding irregular migration activities in the region.
The operation forms part of the Gambia Police Force’s broader strategy to dismantle irregular migration networks, reinforce border security, and protect vulnerable individuals from embarking on perilous journeys.
Police further commended residents of the North Bank Region for their continued cooperation, emphasizing that community support remains vital in combating crime and safeguarding lives and property through coordinated, intelligence-driven policing efforts.
