The Gambia Police Force has raised alarm over a surge in drowning incidents along the country’s coastline, particularly in the Senegambia and West Coast areas.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the force said 16 drowning cases have been recorded between January and October 2025 across beaches in Sanyang, Brufut, Lamin Siakah Tenda, Gunjur, Brusubi, and Kembujeh River.

Most victims were young people aged between 12 and 22 who entered deep waters without supervision.

The Tourist Security Unit (TSU) and the West Coast Regional Police Command expressed serious concern over the trend and urged parents and guardians to monitor children closely, especially during the popular “Sunday Beach” gatherings.

The police said they are working closely with the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, the Gambia Navy, the Gambia Red Cross Society, and the Gambia Tourism Board to improve coastal safety, strengthen rescue operations, and raise public awareness.

The public has been urged to promote safe beach practices and report emergencies or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or by calling 9968885.

“The Gambia Police Force remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring safe recreation along all beaches and waterways,” the statement added.
