President Adama Barrow on Friday paid a condolence visit to Katsina State, Nigeria, following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

Accompanied by First Lady Fatoumata Bah-Barrow, President Barrow arrived at Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport in Katsina at 12:35 p.m., where he was received by Secretary to the State GovernmentAbdullahi Garba Faskari, along with other senior officials.

After inspecting a Guard of Honour, President Barrow proceeded to Daura, Buhari’s hometown, to personally extend condolences to the Buhari family and the Emir of DauraAlhaji (Dr.) Umar Faruq Umar.

At the Buhari family residence, President Barrow was welcomed by Yusuf Buhari, the late president’s eldest son; Alhaji Musa Haro, District Head of Dumurkol; and Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf, among other family members.

Speaking during the visit, President Barrow described Buhari as “a great leader, a brother, and a friend,” whose contributions to African unity and integrity will be long remembered.

“When I heard of his passing, I felt it wasn’t enough to send a message—I had to come in person to mourn with his family and the people of Nigeria,” Barrow said. “President Buhari played a vital role in defending democracy in The Gambia during our 2016 political transition. His support at that crucial time will never be forgotten.”

President Barrow recalled a private conversation with Buhari in Mali, just before his inauguration in 2017, noting: “His words were very clear—that sovereignty belongs to the people. Those words have guided me ever since.”

He urged Nigerians to find comfort in Buhari’s legacy of discipline, leadership, and service. “We accept Allah’s will, but President Buhari’s passing is painful. On behalf of myself, my family, and the people of The Gambia, I offer our deepest condolences.”

In response, Yusuf Buhari expressed heartfelt appreciation for the visit, noting it had brought great comfort to the family.

“Your presence has touched our hearts. Hearing your reflections on our father has strengthened us. He always taught us to lead with honesty and humility. We are grateful you honoured him in this way,” Yusuf said.

Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, passed away last week in London following a period of medical treatment.
