Dr. John N. Jabang, President of the Medical and Dental Association of The Gambia (MDAG) and Vice President and Co-Founder of the Foundation for Epilepsy and Stigma Support – The Gambia (FESSGAM), has called on Gambians to confront stigma surrounding epilepsy and improve access to quality care for people living with the condition.

Speaking on International Epilepsy Day, Dr. Jabang described epilepsy as “one of the most misunderstood neurological conditions, often burdened by stigma, misinformation, and limited access to care.”

He emphasized that timely diagnosis, consistent treatment, and increased community awareness can transform lives.

He commended the Ministry of Health for its ongoing efforts to strengthen neurological and mental health services, support programs for non-communicable diseases, and foster partnerships that improve care for persons with epilepsy.

Dr. Jabang highlighted FESSGAM’s contribution, including the introduction of the country’s first Tele-EEG service, which has expanded diagnostic capacity and strengthened specialist support.

He also referenced the organization’s participation in the International Bureau for Epilepsy Global Epilepsy Needs Assessment Survey, ensuring The Gambia’s experience is represented in global policy discussions.

Recently, FESSGAM partnered with Banjul Mission Brain to hold a march-past and clinical symposium at Brikama District Hospital, bringing epilepsy awareness directly to the community.

Dr. Jabang stressed that no one should be denied dignity, opportunity, or treatment because of a neurological condition.

He called on health professionals, policymakers, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, and the public to work together to close the epilepsy treatment gap and build a more inclusive and compassionate health system.

“Through leadership, partnership, and sustained action, we can transform epilepsy care in The Gambia,” he concluded.
