The Ministry of Youth and Sports has clarified that the Independence Stadium is not yet ready to host international matches despite earlier suggestions that The Gambia senior national team could return to the venue in June 2026.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the Ministry stated that the rehabilitation and remodelling works at the stadium are still ongoing and have not reached the stage for final inspection and approval by CAF.
According to the statement, although major progress has been made on the football pitch and main stadium infrastructure, several important works are still pending, including technical requirements related to the new athletics track and finishing works.

The Ministry stressed that no official clearance or authorisation was granted for any international fixture to be scheduled at the stadium in June, adding that previous announcements made by the Gambia Football Federation regarding hosting matches at the venue were premature.
“The Independence Stadium rehabilitation and remodelling project is still ongoing and has not yet reached the stage for final inspection and approval for international matches by CAF,” the statement noted.
The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure and other partners, reaffirmed its commitment to completing the project and ensuring the facility meets all international standards before reopening for competitive matches and other sporting activities.
The Ministry also acknowledged the disappointment of Gambian football fans who are eager to see the Scorpions return to home soil and assured the public that efforts are being intensified to complete the remaining works in collaboration with contractors, consultants and stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the Ministry wished the Scorpions success ahead of their upcoming international friendly match against Iran and reiterated its support for Gambian football and youth development.
