The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council has suspended all congregational prayers at the Yarambamba Layout Mosque with immediate effect, citing rising tensions linked to a dispute over the mosque’s leadership.

In a directive addressed to imams and community members, the Council said it took the decision after engaging the concerned parties and assessing the situation.

The GSIC expressed concern over increasing misunderstandings within the community, warning that the dispute could escalate into disorder if not carefully managed.

According to the Council, concerns were raised over the manner in which the imam selection process was conducted, particularly regarding consultation and transparency.

It stated that suspending prayers is a temporary measure aimed at preserving unity and safeguarding the sanctity of the mosque while mediation efforts continue.

The controversy surrounds the Yarambamba mosque project, which has been under construction since 2011.

The development, reportedly financed by businessman and community leader Abbas Jarjue, has become the centre of a leadership row that has divided residents into opposing camps.

One faction is backing Imam Cham, while another supports Imam Kalilu Jatta.

The disagreement has reportedly sparked tensions among youths and led to a brief stand-off within the community.

Some residents have accused Jarjue of attempting to impose an imam from outside the community and withholding access to the mosque.

However, Jarjue has strongly denied the allegations, stating that he has not appointed any imam and has no intention of doing so.
“I have only supported the project financially. The conflict is something I never anticipated,” he said, adding that claims he locked the mosque are false.

The Supreme Islamic Council has called on all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperative as efforts are made to resolve the impasse in line with Islamic principles and community harmony.

The suspension will remain in place until further notice as mediation continues.
