Kanifing Municipality Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda has alleged that the central government established the Local Government Commission of Inquiry with the primary intention of targeting him and undermining his political career.
Speaking in a media interview on Monday morning, Mayor Bensouda said the government had initially planned to set up a ministerial taskforce headed by former Lands Minister Musa Drammeh, but that effort was halted after he challenged it in court and won the case.
“They wanted to form a ministerial taskforce headed by the then minister, Musa Drammeh, but that attempt failed because I went to court and the court ruled in our favour,” he said.
“When that did not work, they convinced the President to establish this commission and include all the other councils so it would seem like it was meant for everyone. But the real target was me.”
Bensouda added that despite appearing before the commission for ten days, no evidence of wrongdoing was found against him.
“Thank God, throughout the ten days of my appearances, there were no findings of fraud or any irregularities in my testimony.”
He further said the achievements of the Kanifing Municipal Council have encouraged other councils to replicate KMC’s development initiatives.
“The success of our projects is the reason other councils are now copying our model,” he stated.
