Mayor Talib Bensouda has announced that the United Movement for Change (UMC) will soon hold a national congress described as “one of its kind,” signaling a major milestone for the rapidly growing political movement.
Speaking during a regional UMC event, Talib said the congress will set a new benchmark for political mobilization in the Gambia.
“When I was in UDP, I told them that if I led organising a congress, it would be the biggest of its kind. Now, in UMC, we are preparing a congress that will set a new standard,” he said.
Talib emphasized that the congress is not just about numbers but about consolidating UMC’s vision for national development.
“We formed the United Movement for Change to develop The Gambia, because today, if you ask any Gambian, including President Adama Barrow, whether the country has developed, he will tell you no,” he said.
While highlighting the movement’s ambitions, Talib stressed that UMC respects democratic principles and constitutional limits.
“That’s why at UMC, we will respect the two-term limit. I have said this and I am repeating it: UMC will be the next government of this country, and I don’t say this because of politics, but I believe it based on what I see in you,” he added.
The national congress is expected to bring together delegates from all regions, strengthen UMC’s organizational structures, and formalize strategies for upcoming presidential, National Assembly, mayoral, and chairperson elections.
