Allegations of the fraudulent issuance of birth certificates at a voter registration centre in Tanji have sparked political tensions, with claims and counterclaims emerging from rival parties.
Babucarr Siddiq Jammeh, a councillor at the Brikama Area Council and member of the United Democratic Party, alleged that individuals linked to the ruling National People’s Party were issuing birth certificates to foreigners.
“We’re currently at Brusubi Police Station after our team caught NPP operatives issuing national birth certificates to foreigners at the Tanji voter registration centre,” he said.
“Our team caught the culprits and they are all in police custody for now. This is more than electoral fraud. This is a criminal act involving the fraudulent acquisition of national documents,” he added.
A video circulating on social media shows a heated confrontation among a group of people, reportedly linked to the incident at the registration centre.
Images have also surfaced showing Seedy Njie, a senior official of the ruling party, alongside Yankuba Darboe, a senior UDP member and chairman of the Brikama Area Council, at a police station, allegedly in connection with the matter.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding their presence remain unclear.
Police have not yet issued an official statement on the allegations, and it has not been independently verified whether any suspects have been formally charged.
