Fatoumatta Touma Njai, National Assembly member for Banjul South, has denied holding dual UK-Gambian citizenship, saying that the allegation is baseless.

Ms Njai has been accused of holding a dual citizenship after one Haddy Jallow of Banjul asked the Independent Electoral Commission to investigate the allegation surrounding the lawmaker.

But speaking to Gambiana exclusively, Fatoumatta Touma Njai scoffed at the allegation and said the allegation was “a news” to her.

She said: “I don’t have any comment I just saw as you have seen it on the papers. We are in Ramadan; I shouldn’t be even discussing this to be honest. I have been serving my country, I went to the UK to study and I came home in 1989 and worked at Social Security, worked at GRTS.”

“I went back in 2015 to do my masters, I came back, I started work at the Ministry of Trade. So, I don’t know, I have my visa. I have residency in the UK but residency is different, I can go in and out. But to go to Europe, I need a visa.”

“I can’t say anything, they are accusing somebody, let them come out, all I am saying is that I served my country, I went abroad to study. I grew up here,” she added.

According to her, she had to apply for a visa if she wanted to travel to Europe and other parts of the world.
