The Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, has defended the development record of President Adama Barrow’s government, dismissing opposition criticism as politically driven as the country looks ahead to elections in 2026.

Speaking at a foundation-laying ceremony for a new road project in Kassa Kunda on Saturday, Mr Sillah said the government’s focus on infrastructure was tangible proof of its achievements, adding that voters would judge the administration by what it had delivered on the ground.

He said road construction and other public works would form a central part of the ruling National People’s Party’s campaign message, arguing that development outcomes mattered more than political debate.

He accused opposition parties of attempting to stall progress, pointing to their rejection of the national budget, which he said was designed to support development projects across the country.

Mr Sillah highlighted what he described as major government gains, including expanded access to electricity, water supply projects, new schools and improved road networks.

He said these efforts had contributed to stability and economic growth, adding that The Gambia was increasingly being referenced positively by international institutions such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Challenging opposition claims of widespread hardship, the minister said while government had a responsibility to create opportunities, individuals also had a duty to work and improve their own livelihoods.

He also cited sector-specific achievements, saying the Ministry of Agriculture had supported more than 700 gardens with water and solar power, while the Ministry of Fisheries had constructed over 150 boreholes.

He added that around 90% of communities were now connected to electricity.
