The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed serious concern over the recent summoning of its National Executive Member, Mr. Borry S. Touray, to the Kairaba Police Station for questioning.

The police action relates to remarks Mr. Touray made at a recent political gathering.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UDP described both the timing and circumstances of the police summons as “highly troubling.”

The party claimed that the questioning followed a public statement by the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), which, according to the UDP, deliberately misrepresented Mr. Touray’s comments.

The UDP also accused the state broadcaster, the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS), of amplifying the alleged misrepresentation.

“Defamatory and misleading reportage further twisted the context of his remarks in an apparent attempt to cast them in a false and politically charged light,” the party said.

The party warned that this incident reflects an “alarming trend” suggesting the creeping politicization of state institutions.

It urged the Gambia Police Force to handle the matter professionally and impartially, resisting any pressure from political actors seeking to use law enforcement as a tool for intimidation or suppression.

“The UDP reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the rule of law and to conducting all political activities within the framework of lawful democratic practice,” the statement said.

It added that the party remains mindful of The Gambia’s history, where state security institutions have, at times, been used for partisan purposes, with serious consequences for democracy, justice, and national cohesion.

The UDP concluded by asserting that it will not tolerate any attempts to weaponize state institutions against its members, supporters, or the democratic space in general.
