The United Democratic Party (UDP) has called on the government to take urgent measures to address the rising cost of living, growing insecurity and concerns about corruption, as The Gambia marks its 61st Independence Anniversary.

In a statement issued to commemorate the anniversary, the opposition party congratulated President Adama Barrow and extended independence greetings to Gambians at home and in the diaspora.

The UDP said the anniversary should serve as a moment of national reflection, honouring the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers while renewing commitment to building a “just, prosperous and accountable nation.”

However, the party argued that many Gambians continue to face serious economic hardship, driven by rising prices of essential goods and services such as food, housing and transportation.

“Many families today face an unrelenting high cost of living,” the UDP said, urging the government to adopt “urgent, practical measures” to ease the burden on ordinary citizens

The party also raised concerns about what it described as persistent corruption and lack of transparency, warning that these issues continue to undermine public trust and slow meaningful development.

The UDP further appealed for compassion from the government during the period when Muslims prepare for Ramadan and Christians observe Lent, calling on leaders to ensure policies reflect empathy toward struggling households.

On security, the party said rising crime and growing insecurity are creating fear in communities across the country and urged the authorities to prioritise effective, community-centred strategies while strengthening law enforcement in a transparent and accountable manner.

The UDP concluded by reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, economic justice, transparency and the protection of every Gambian’s dignity and security.
