The Unite Movement for Change (UMC) has condemned a series of “disrespectful and inflammatory” social media posts targeting Kanifing Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda and mocking both Christian and Muslim religious traditions.
The posts, circulated by an account named Gaia’s Child, digitally depict Mayor Bensouda dressed as a Christian cardinal and, in another image, show him “praying on water” in a manner meant to imitate the revered moment when Serigne Touba prayed in the sea — an act held sacred by the Mouride community.
UMC described the images as “highly insensitive”, saying they belittle Christian symbolism and disrespect the spiritual legacy of Serigne Touba and his followers.

“Such actions are unacceptable and run contrary to the values of peace, mutual respect and coexistence that define The Gambia,” the movement said.
UMC noted that Mayor Bensouda has long been known for his respect for all faiths, and said it was “regrettable” that his inclusive stance was being misused to provoke religious tension.
The movement also raised concern that the offensive posts have remained online for days without condemnation from the UDP, even though some party supporters — including an elected councillor — interacted positively with the content.
“At moments like this, silence does not promote harmony; it signals quiet approval of divisive behaviour,” UMC warned.

The statement urged all political actors to avoid actions that could inflame religious sentiment, stressing that The Gambia has always been a country where Muslims and Christians coexist peacefully.
UMC called on the UDP leadership to publicly denounce the posts and reaffirm their commitment to protecting religious harmony.
“No political ambition should come at the expense of national unity or the dignity of any faith community,” the movement added.
