Essa Faal has slammed the police for their “heavy-handed” treatment of peaceful protesters during demonstrating outside PURA headquarters’ in Kairaba Avenue.

The demonstrators were opposing PURA’s new directive to raise data prices, and dozens were arrested in a dramatic showdown outside the authority’s headquarters.

Among those taken away was rapper and activist Killa Ace, real name Ali Cham.

In a statement, Faal, secretary general of All People’s Party-Sobeyaa, called the arrests unlawful and the force used “excessive.”

He said the youths were protesting fairly against policies that threaten affordable data access for ordinary Gambians.

“We are outraged by reports of these tactics being used to silence citizens voicing their concerns,” Faal said.

“PURA’s actions favour corporate interests over people’s rights, and this is a clear violation of constitutional freedoms.”

APP-Sobeyaa is demanding the immediate release of all detainees and urges the Barrow government to reverse the policy.

“Our youth rely on affordable data for school, business, and staying connected. Their voices must be heard, not silenced,” Faal added.

He stated that: “we stand with GALA and all Gambians resisting unfair policies. Public institutions should serve the people, not suppress them.”
