The Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has warned that while the government cannot prevent Gambians from enlisting in foreign armies, it is urging them to reconsider.

Speaking on GRTS, Dr. Ceesay said Gambians are adults who make their own decisions, but joining conflicts abroad, such as in Russia, is not a wise choice.

“What we can do is discourage them, not to do it, but these are adults who make their own decisions to go and fight,” he said.

“It’s difficult to stop them, but what we can do is to say that don’t go and do it.”

The minister acknowledged the growing numbers of Gambians involved in such conflicts, though he could not provide exact figures.

“No, we don’t have the figures, but we know that the numbers are rising,” Dr. Ceesay added, stressing that the issue is not unique to The Gambia but affects other African nations as well.

He cited similar press releases from Kenya and other countries on the continent.

Dr. Ceesay urged young Gambians to stay in the country and make use of the opportunities available at home.

“We are telling them that it’s not a good decision and they must stay in this country and make use of the opportunities available to them,” he said, highlighting the government’s focus on guiding rather than coercing its citizens.

The statement comes amid rising concerns over the safety and legal implications for Gambians fighting in international conflicts, with families and authorities calling for more awareness campaigns to dissuade potential recruits.
