As the world observes International Human Rights Day, the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the inherent dignity and equal rights of all individuals.

In a statement released, the centre highlighted the continuing importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and called for renewed efforts to uphold freedom, justice, and peace across Africa.

The statement praised the work of human rights defenders, civil society actors, and community leaders who tirelessly promote democratic governance, gender equality, justice, and the protection of vulnerable populations, often at personal risk.

“Their resilience strengthens democratic institutions and ensures that human rights remain a lived reality on our continent,” ACDHRS noted.

ACDHRS also emphasized its ongoing initiatives to strengthen civil society engagement, including the annual NGOs Forum held ahead of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights’ Ordinary Sessions.

The forum provides a platform for civil society groups to coordinate advocacy, share strategies, and amplify grassroots voices.

Additionally, the centre conducts regular human rights training sessions to equip defenders with the knowledge and skills to address both emerging and persistent challenges.

Despite progress, ACDHRS expressed concern over persistent obstacles such as shrinking civic spaces, threats to journalists, discrimination against women and marginalized groups, unconstitutional changes of government, and ongoing conflicts and displacement.

The centre urged governments, regional bodies, and international partners to uphold their obligations, protect fundamental freedoms, and ensure accountability for human rights violations.

The statement further encouraged African citizens, particularly youth, to actively participate in building inclusive, just, and peaceful societies.

ACDHRS concluded by reaffirming its mission to foster a continent where democratic institutions are strong and accountable, and where every individual can enjoy their rights without fear.
