Azerbaijan and The Gambia have held discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across political, economic, humanitarian, education and media sectors.
From 15 to 18 December, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Morocco and The Gambia, Nazim Samadov, visited several government institutions, universities and media organisations in The Gambia as part of an official engagement programme.
According to the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Rabat, the ambassador held meetings with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Fabakary Tombong Jatta; Vice President Seedy Njie; Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Lang Yabou; Minister of Youth and Sports Bakary Badjie; and the Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe.
The meetings focused on the current state of relations between the two countries and prospects for deeper cooperation, including the implementation of joint projects.
Both sides welcomed the friendly ties between Azerbaijan and The Gambia and highlighted the importance of collaboration within international bodies such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement.
Participants also stressed the role of parliamentary diplomacy, noting that the establishment of friendship groups within the legislatures of both countries would help strengthen inter-parliamentary relations.
As part of the visit, Ambassador Samadov toured the Faraba campus of the University of The Gambia, accompanied by the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Pierre Gomez.
Discussions included potential support for the university through the Azerbaijan International Development Agency, with the Gambian side considering possible proposals.
The ambassador also visited Gambia Radio and Television Services, where talks centred on potential cooperation between media institutions in both countries.
The discussions highlighted the importance of promoting Azerbaijan in The Gambia, strengthening ties between journalists, and organising familiarisation visits for Gambian media professionals to Azerbaijan.
