Inside the factory floor of Banjul Breweries

The management of Banjul Breweries Company Limited will on Thursday meet members of the National Assembly, the company has announced.

The meeting will be on the government excise tax on alcoholic beverages and the recent intervention of the National Assembly members.

On Monday, lawmakers met in an extraordinary session of the National Assembly to debate a revised bill on the 75 percent excise tax levied on the Company by the government and unanimously reduced it to 35 percent.

The Gambia government last December increased excise tax on alcohol beverages from 15 percent to 75 percent which led to the laying off of 18 staff at the company.

However, officials of the Banjul Breweries Company have refused to comment on the tax reduction until after their meeting with members of the National Assembly.

The Company, which is the only beer brewery in the country, has been operating for over four decades and had contributed substantially to the Gambia’s economic growth.
