President Adama Barrow has called on African leaders to transform the continent’s vast natural resources into jobs, investment and inclusive economic growth, warning that Africa cannot afford to let its development potential go unrealised amid mounting global challenges.
Delivering the opening address at the 2026 African Caucus held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, Barrow said Africa remains richly endowed with human capital, abundant natural resources and a youthful population capable of driving innovation and long-term prosperity.
He said the continent’s young and vibrant population represents one of its greatest strengths, with the creativity and talent needed to shape Africa’s future if supported through the right investments and opportunities.
Despite these advantages, Barrow acknowledged that African countries continue to grapple with multiple challenges, including the spillover effects of geopolitical tensions, climate change, infrastructure deficits and widening financing gaps.
Referring to the theme of this year’s meeting, “Transforming Africa’s Economies Through Investment, Innovation and Inclusion,” the President said the discussions come at a crucial moment as African governments seek practical solutions to accelerate structural transformation and inclusive growth.
Barrow argued that unlocking financing and making better use of Africa’s natural resource wealth are essential to creating quality jobs, reducing poverty and strengthening economies across the continent.
He also stressed that rising global uncertainty and geopolitical tensions make it even more important for African nations to work together with international financial institutions and development partners to mobilise investment and find lasting solutions to shared economic challenges.
He welcomed delegates from across the continent, including finance ministers, central bank governors, representatives of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank Group and African Development Bank, thanking them for gathering in The Gambia to advance Africa’s development agenda.
