The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) says Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs) are still being issued to Gambians abroad, contrary to reports that the service has been suspended.

GID Deputy Public Relations Officer Cadet ASI Sulayman Sambou said MRP production for the diaspora remains ongoing in locations where biometric passport enrolment has not yet been introduced.

The clarification comes as The Gambia gradually expands its biometric passport system.

Unlike an MRP, which can be electronically read through the machine-readable zone printed on the passport, a biometric passport contains an electronic chip storing the holder’s biometric and personal information.

Sambou urged Gambians abroad to submit passport applications and supporting documents through Gambian embassies and consular offices, which are the recognised channels for passport processing.

Applicants are advised to begin renewal procedures when their passports have six months or less remaining before expiry.

The GID said some difficulties experienced by applicants are linked to informal channels, urgent requests and attempts to bypass established procedures.

It also warned that requests to alter personal details, including dates of birth, must follow legal procedures and passport regulations.

Sambou said the Department plans to deploy additional teams abroad to expand biometric passport enrolment and improve access to biometric passports.

The GID reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity and security of Gambian identity and travel documents in line with ICAO regulations and international best practices.

It urged Gambians abroad to avoid intermediaries and use official channels to prevent misinformation, fraud and unnecessary delays.
