Dr Karamo Sonko, a respected Gambian academic, businessman and former Chairman of TAF Africa Global, has died in London.

His death was announced on Friday by TAF Africa Global Chief Executive Officer Mustapha Njie.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Karamo Sonko, who died early this morning in London,” Njie said in a statement.

“A cherished childhood friend and trusted confidant, he also served as Chairman of TAF Africa Global. Many Gambians will fondly remember his powerful and inspiring address as Guest Speaker at TAFCON 2017.”

Dr Sonko was widely respected for his contributions to academia, business and national development.

Throughout his career, he played an important role in mentoring young professionals and supporting initiatives aimed at advancing education and entrepreneurship in The Gambia and beyond.

As Chairman of TAF Africa Global, he provided strategic leadership and guidance to one of the country’s leading real estate and development companies. He was also known for his commitment to public service and community development.

Njie extended his condolences to the late scholar’s family.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his immediate and extended family, both in The Gambia and abroad. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” he said.

Tributes have begun pouring in from friends, colleagues and admirers, many remembering Dr Sonko as an accomplished intellectual, visionary leader and dedicated patriot whose contributions left a lasting impact on Gambian society.

Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
