The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the appointment of Major Malick Sanyang as its new Director of Press and Public Relations.

Major Sanyang, a seasoned communication strategist, brings more than a decade of experience combining military professionalism with media and civil–military engagement expertise.

He has previously served as Acting Director and Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, as well as Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff.

His military career includes roles as Post Commander under Operation Tiger Watch, Platoon Commander at the 1st Infantry Battalion, and Instructor at the GAF Training School.

Internationally, he has represented The Gambia in peacekeeping missions, including deployments to Darfur, Sudan with GAMCOY-19, and to South Sudan under UNMISS, leading community policing and civilian protection initiatives.

Major Sanyang has also participated in regional and international exercises and symposiums, including Exercise Gulf Shield I in Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Coalition Counter-Terrorism Symposium in Riyadh, and Exercise Shared Accord in Rwanda under US AFRICOM.

Beyond his military service, he has a strong media background, hosting major national events such as the Gambia’s Golden Jubilee Independence Celebration and the 2022 Presidential Inauguration of President Adama Barrow.

He has served as Editor-In-Chief of Ahooah Magazine, producing editions highlighting GAF’s work in national security, civil engagement, and peacekeeping.

Academically, Major Sanyang holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and is pursuing an MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of The Gambia.

He has also completed specialized military and communication courses in Mali, Kenya, Ghana, and the United States.

The GAF described his appointment as a step towards enhancing transparency, professionalism, and stronger public engagement.

Captain Kemo Kanuteh, Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, said Major Sanyang’s experience and leadership make him well-positioned to advance the Armed Forces’ communication strategy.
