
The Ministry of Youth and the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) have officially launched the organising committees for the 8th AIPS Africa Congress, scheduled to take place in Banjul in February 2026.

The launch saw speeches from Taibou Sonko, Deputy Director of the Department of Youth and Sports, speaking on behalf of Honourable Minister Bakary Y. Badjie, and Omar Jarju, President of SJAG.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Sonko described the occasion as “a significant milestone for Gambian sports and journalism” and emphasised the Ministry’s full commitment to the event.
Deputy Director Sonko praised SJAG for their dedication to hosting the prestigious gathering, calling it “a testament to the strong partnership between the Ministry and the local sports media.”
“This is a proud moment for our nation and a clear recognition of our growing reputation as a committed stakeholder in African sports development,” Sonko said.
He added, “Sports is an essential tool for empowering our young people, offering them opportunities and a stake in their future,” and reassured the committee of the Ministry’s support: “The Ministry pledges its full support and collaboration to ensure a successful and memorable congress.”
Omar Jarju the President of the SJAG highlighted the historic significance of the event for The Gambia, noting, “It will be the first time the country hosts an AIPS Africa Congress, a milestone that underscores our growing presence and credibility within the international sports community.”
The award-winning journalist described the AIPS Africa Congress as “the most important gathering for African sports media professionals, providing a platform for strategic discussions, networking, and knowledge exchange on media development, sports governance, and ethical journalism in the sports industry.”
Omar Jarju also praised the contributions of key stakeholders, stating, “Our productive collaboration with the Government of The Gambia and the Gambia Tourism Board lays the groundwork for promoting The Gambia as a desirable sports tourism destination.”
Addressing the organising committees, he said, “You are the backbone of this congress. Your dedication, professionalism, and hard work will determine the success of this historic event.”
Other speakers, Isatou Keita, President of the Gambia Press Union, and Musa Sise, former SJAG President and current Secretary General of AIPS Africa, also highlighted the historic significance of the congress for The Gambia and African sports journalism.
The 8th AIPS Africa Congress will bring together sports media professionals, administrators, and global sports leaders from across Africa and beyond, positioning The Gambia at the heart of the continent’s media and sporting dialogue.
