The National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation (NFSPMC) has launched motorised groundnut screening machines and Point-of-Sale (POS) devices as part of a major push to modernise The Gambia’s groundnut industry.

The equipment was unveiled on Friday at the Corporation’s headquarters in Banjul, in the presence of government officials, secco leaders and farmer representatives.

NFSPMC Managing Director Muhammad Njie described the initiative as a “historic step forward” aimed at strengthening the groundnut value chain through efficient and transparent technologies.

Mr Njie said the Corporation’s role extends beyond buying and marketing produce, noting that NFSPMC is committed to upgrading production and marketing systems to meet the needs of farmers.

“Today’s event represents progress, but more importantly, it reflects a partnership, a commitment from NFSPMC to stand firmly with our farmers,” he said.

The new motorised screens, which will be distributed across communities, are expected to improve the cleaning and grading of groundnuts, reduce post-harvest losses and boost the market value of produce.

The Managing Director said introducing modern tools at secco level is central to the Corporation’s strategy to increase efficiency and productivity.

NFSPMC also announced the rollout of digital payment systems using POS devices during the buying season.

The shift is designed to make transactions faster and more secure, promote transparency and reduce risks associated with cash payments. It also aims to enhance financial inclusion in rural areas.

Mr Njie thanked the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Demba Sabally, for his support, and praised secco presidents and farmers for their cooperation and contribution to national food security.

He said the success of the new systems will depend on proper use and maintenance, adding that NFSPMC will continue providing training and technical support as part of its commitment to mechanisation, digitalisation and farmer empowerment.

The event ended with a call for continued collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the effective use of the new machines and digital platforms.
