The Gambia Navy has intercepted a local canoe carrying would-be migrants in the creeks along the Bunyado coastal area early this morning.
The interception was carried out by the Navy’s Riverine Coastal Detachment team as part of intensified littoral patrols along the entire estuary of the River Gambia, aimed at curbing the dangerous irregular migration (“backway”) routes.

The operation comes in the wake of a recent boat tragedy that claimed lives and once again highlighted the grave risks associated with irregular sea crossings.
Authorities say the latest incident underscores the urgency of stepped-up patrols to protect Gambian youths from embarking on perilous journeys.

The Gambia Navy reiterated its commitment to sustaining enhanced coastal surveillance and urged young people to avoid illegal migration routes, warning that such journeys continue to result in avoidable loss of life.
