The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) to establish an AIMS Satellite Centre in the country.
The agreement was signed on Thursday (10 December 10) during an official visit to AIMS Senegal, and is aimed at positioning The Gambia as a future regional hub for advanced mathematics, data science and artificial intelligence.
Under the partnership, Gambian students and lecturers will gain increased access to AIMS’s postgraduate programmes in Senegal, Rwanda and South Africa. The collaboration also seeks to strengthen local capacity through specialised training for university lecturers and secondary school teachers, as well as joint research and innovation initiatives.

The planned satellite centre is expected to grow into a full AIMS Centre of Excellence, supporting The Gambia’s long-term science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) development goals.
Representatives of AIMS Senegal, including Professor Faal and Professor Sam Yalla, described the partnership as a strong model of South-South cooperation aimed at advancing scientific excellence across Africa.
