Alieu K Jammeh, Gambia’s high commissioner to Sierra Leone, has died today (11 May) in Freetown.

The late Jammeh served as the youths and sports minister from 2012 to 2017 in the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.

He was later appointed as ambassador by President Adama Barrow to Guinea Bissua and later transferred to Sierra Leone.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad said it learnt with “deep sorrow the demise of Ambassador Alieu K. Jammeh, The Gambia’s High Commissioner to the Republic of Sierra Leone. This sad event took place on Thursday, 11th May 2023  in Freetown.”

The ministry added that the late “ambassador Jammeh will be remembered for his positive stance in protecting the interests and welfare of the Gambian community promoting peace and maintaining a strong bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and countries he served as ambassador.”

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends condolences to H.E Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, family and friends of the deceased and by extension the Gambian community in Sierra Leona. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” it continued.
