Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has confirmed that it has recovered D2 million from the funds allegedly stolen by the chief executive.

The CEO Mrs Sainabou Martin Sonko is facing a corruption probe over missing D12 million and is currently suspended while police investigate the allegations.

“An additional D2, 400,000 was successfully recovered from the fraudulent transaction of D12 million loan. The additional amount of D2, 400,000 has been returned to the account of KMC’s staff welfare association. This brings the balance of the missing funds to D900, 000[sic],” Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda told reporters at a press conference.

The revelation comes amid a tug-of-war between KMC and the Ministry of Lands and Local Government over Mrs Sonko suspension.

The ministry demands that the council allow the embattled CEO Mrs Sonko to resume work while the investigation is pending but KMC has rejected the order.

Mayor Bensouda insisted that the suspended CEO should stay home on line with the council’s resolution and the terms of her administrative leave.
