A student was injured after violence erupted during a congress at the University of The Gambia in Kanifing following a dispute linked to the Students’ Union financial report.

The disturbance reportedly broke out during deliberations at the congress, with tensions escalating into a physical confrontation among students.

Eyewitnesses said the situation quickly turned chaotic, forcing officers of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) to intervene to restore order and prevent further violence.

During the confusion, one person sustained injuries, though the extent of the injuries was not immediately disclosed.

Following the incident, Ismaila Fadera, the newly elected president of the University of The Gambia Students’ Union, was invited for questioning by police.

Police authorities later clarified that Mr. Fadera was not arrested and was not found to have participated in any fight linked to the incident.

According to police, individuals invited to the station were only questioned as part of efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the clash and prevent further escalation on campus.

Witnesses also reported that officers at the scene urged students to remain calm and avoid further provocation following the disturbance.

The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, and university authorities are yet to release an official statement on the matter.

The incident has, however, sparked concern among students over rising tensions during campus political activities and student union proceedings.
