The Gambian online space is more toxic than a hypersonic missile, and this is why I agree with many who choose to abandon social media for the sake of their mental health.

It is rare to come across issues of relevance on social media occupied by Gambian users. Almost every post contains some form of offensive or despising language.

This shows how far behind time this country continues to lag. Instead of debating issues of substance, many engage in distasteful cyber-attacks 24/7. I often ask myself: don’t these cyber warriors have anything meaningful to do other than insult each other online?

We have a plethora of national and social issues to discuss, yet a large portion of these loud voices on social media barely touch on them.

Instead, they sit behind their keyboards and launch a barrage of divisive remarks. That is not bravery; it is exposing your stupidity to the world, sorry for my language.

With the election fast approaching, the space is more toxic than ever. So much divisive content and threats to our national security are being spewed continuously in this space, which is meant for learning, education, and self-improvement.

Developed countries, and those striving to develop, are better utilizing this space for good, while some of us continue to abuse it.

Think about this, those who engage in such behavior, and stop it for good.

We can debate and argue on this space healthily and on matters of substance without reducing ourselves to charlatans.
