Having spent nearly a decade in the classroom, I know firsthand the sacrifices, resilience and commitment that define the teaching profession.

Teachers are more than just conveyors of knowledge; they are builders of character, nurturers of dreams, and custodians of the nation’s future.

But beyond the annual greetings and messages of appreciation, there lies a deeper truth we must confront. All what teachers need is not a message of just “Happy Teachers’ Day” but a better PAY that will save them from being slaves to LOANS. True recognition of teachers comes not only in words, but in policies and actions that ensure their welfare, dignity and growth.

It is sad but true that teachers are the only civil servants without any cadre-specific allowance. This injustice must be addressed urgently.

The call for cadre-specific allowances is not a privilege, but a right that acknowledges the unique role teachers play in shaping every sector of our society.

The Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) must go beyond diplomacy that has repeatedly failed. It must ensure that the government includes cadre-specific allowances in the next estimated budget, or else call for a sit-down strike. Enough is enough.

On this World Teachers’ Day, I celebrate the passion of every teacher who, despite the odds, continues to inspire and shape lives.

Yet, I also call on governments, communities, and policymakers to go beyond symbolic appreciation and commit to meaningful reforms that guarantee teachers the respect, support, and fair compensation they deserve.

Happy World Teachers’ Day to all the men and women who continue to illuminate the path of knowledge and transformation.
