A conflict resolution group is planning to visit Sanyang as part of mediation efforts to resolve the dispute between locals and Senegalase fishermen.

The Gambia-based Senegalese Ambassadors for Peace says it wants to improve community relations between the Senegalese fishermen and the youths.

The group’s president Madame Awa Diallo, told Gambiana in an exclusive interview that the communal violence doesn’t look good for The Gambia-Senegal bilateral relations.

“We are inviting the people of Sanyang to please restore peace and exercise calmness because this is not a good image to Seneg-Gambia relationship.”

She denounced arson attack on the police station and the Mauritanian-owned fishmeal plant as well as attack on Senegalese fishermen saying “alhough somebody is guilty of murder that person should be tried, but not burning peoples properties.”

Ms Diallo added that the two countries shares almost everything in terms of culture saying her group has been advocating for the rights of people of the two nations and preaching peace for years.

Two days ago an angry mob protesting the death of Gibril Ceesay, who was killed in his house by an alleged intruder, attacked Senegalese fishermen in the town forcing many to flee to neighbouring Batokunku.

The suspect believed to be a Senegalese is in custody as police investigate the alleged murder.
