President Adama Barrow has expressed deep sorrow over recent migrant boat disasters reported around Jinak Island, offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

The president made the remarks on New Year’s Day during an audience with a delegation from Brufut at the State House in Banjul.

He described the incidents as tragic and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.

President Barrow also extended sympathy to survivors of the accidents, wishing them a speedy and full recovery.

Using the occasion to address the wider issue of irregular migration, the president called on young Gambians to reflect on the risks involved and to redirect their energies towards national development.

Recounting his own experience as a migrant in Europe, President Barrow said his success was shaped by his faith in The Gambia and his decision to eventually return home.

He urged young people to seek opportunities within the country rather than embark on dangerous journeys abroad.

The president said his government remained committed to tackling the root causes of irregular migration, including unemployment and limited economic opportunities for young people.

As part of efforts to support women and youth empowerment, President Barrow announced a donation of 200,000 dalasis to women operating at the Brufut fish landing site. He also approved the construction of a new market in the community.
