The leadership of the Gambia Teachers’ Union has met with teachers in Region 2 East following a sit-down strike triggered by unpaid double shift allowance arrears covering October to December 2025.

The meeting was held under the banner of the United for Double Shift Pay Resolution, where the union briefed teachers on ongoing engagements with the government over the delayed payments.

According to the GTU leadership, these discussions resulted in the reinstatement of the double shift allowance, which was paid in January, while the outstanding three months’ arrears are expected to be settled in February.

Teachers in the region commended the union for its intervention and sustained advocacy, describing the engagement as timely and reassuring.

At the end of the meeting, the teachers officially called off the strike.

Normal teaching and learning activities are expected to resume tomorrow in all affected schools across Region 2 East.

The Gambia Teachers’ Union reaffirmed its commitment to defending the welfare and interests of its members, assuring teachers that it will continue to engage authorities to ensure agreed commitments are fully honoured.
