The Sanyang man who was brutally killed by an alleged robber has been laid to rest.

The funeral for 30-year-old Gibril Ceesay took place today in the town and was attended by the deputy governor of West Coast Region, Musa Suso, and chief of Kombo South, who both called for calm.

Yesterday an angry mob attacked the town’s police station and a fishmeal plant setting them ablaze. Fire-fighters were at the scene until 2am before they could put out the fire.

Senegalese fishermen in the town were also chased away by the angry mob, many of them fleeing by boats to neighbouring communities to seek refuge.

Police on Tuesday issued a statement calling for calm and assured the victim’s family that justice would be served.

The alleged killer is in police custody, after he was apprehended by local residents on Monday as he tried to flee by boat. He is believed to be a Senegalese national.
