The Gambia Teachers’ Union (GTU) has raised serious concern over the increasing incidents of student violence directed at teachers, describing the situation as a major threat to the country’s education system.
The Union’s alarm follows a recent attack at Yunus English Senior Secondary School, where a teacher suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by a female student.
GTU General Secretary Marie Antoinette Corr strongly criticised the trend, stressing the need for urgent action. She noted that the safety of teachers must always be guaranteed, adding, “The safety and dignity of teachers must never be compromised.

“What happened at Yunus Senior Secondary School must serve as a wake-up call. We cannot and will not tolerate violence against teachers. The Government must act swiftly to protect those who nurture our nation.”
Mr. Ismaila S. Ceesay, the GTU President also highlighted growing concerns across schools, particularly in institutions where oversight is weak.
He stated, “Teachers deserve to work in an environment free from fear. We demand firm enforcement of the laws protecting citizens and stronger oversight over all schools, especially private institutions where regulatory gaps persist. The GTU will pursue every avenue to ensure our members are protected, respected, and supported.”

The Union is calling for stronger law enforcement, tighter monitoring of schools, clear disciplinary structures, and safety mechanisms that respond quickly to threats or abuse directed at educators.
GTU maintains that anyone involved in violence must face appropriate consequences to discourage future acts.
The Union also appealed to parents, communities and school authorities to help restore respect, discipline, and accountability in all learning environments.
Reaffirming its commitment to teachers, GTU stressed that it will continue to advocate for the rights and safety of educators across the country, insisting that violence must be confronted and eliminated from all classrooms.
