Yesterday, I received the very sad news of the passing of veteran journalist Bruce Asemota.

Bruce was a fine journalist and The Gambia’s best court reporter. The courts were his specialty, and he had a unique gift for translating legal jargon into plain English.

I worked closely with him at the Daily Observer during my editorship, and his reports were always among the easiest to read and publish.

Like the consummate professional he was, Bruce would return to the office after a long day in court and diligently write up his stories.

To me, Bruce was more than a colleague and brother. He was family, and I was privileged to have known him. He honoured me deeply by naming his first son, Modou Musa Asemota, after me.

I still remember one September morning when he walked into my office to tell me he had given his son my name.

Days earlier, I had congratulated him on the birth, never expecting such a gesture. I was humbled and grateful, and it perfectly reflected his character — kind, loyal, and down to earth.

The Gambian media has lost a legend and a torchbearer.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, The Standard newspaper, and the wider Gambian media fraternity.

To my toma, I am truly sorry for your irreparable loss. Stay strong, and know that I am here for you.

May Allah have mercy on Bruce’s soul and grant him Janatul Firdaus. Ameen.
