Today, September 28, marks fifteen years since the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and uncle, Imam Alhaji Cherno Dawda Jallow, a monumental figure in Gambian religious life, a revered scholar of profound conviction, and a devoted servant of faith whose remarkable legacy continues to illuminate the hearts and minds of many.

Imam Jallow, born in 1930 at 15 Perseverance Street (Bobben) in Banjul, was a man of Profound humility and a sincere desire to serve.

His quest for Islamic knowledge took him to esteemed institutions in Fouta, St. Louis (Ndar) in Senegal, Khaihaidi in Mauritania, and the illustrious city of Cairo, Egypt.

This lifelong pursuit shaped his extraordinary journey. Upon returning to his homeland, Imam Jallow dedicated himself to teaching the Glorious Qur’an and Sharia, profoundly impacting the lives of hundreds across The Gambia and beyond.

He was not just a teacher; he was a guiding beacon for many seeking enlightenment in the Noble Deen. His mediation in countless disputes and his role as a moral compass were invaluable to his community.

His voice—gentle yet unwavering—provided comfort, clarity, and strength to those who sought his counsel. As the Imam of Police Line in Banjul and one of the longest-serving preachers of Waju Islam at GRTS, Imam Jallow left an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape of The Gambia.

Appointed in 1975 as a Fula-language preacher at Radio Gambia, he eventually became the head of all preachers at the station. His programme, consistently accompanied by the resonant song “Alhajie Baba Julia Baba,” became a spiritual anchor, transcending borders and uniting hearts.

As Alhajie Mbacke Kah aptly noted, while he composed the music for Khalifa Alhaji Cherno Baba Jallow, it was Imam Dawda Jallow who brought it to life, transforming it into a beloved anthem on Radio Gambia and within the Police Band.

In 1977, he was chosen by the government to serve as the head guide for pilgrims making the sacred journey to Mecca. The following year marked his appointment as Imam of the Old Police Barracks Lines, and he later rose to become the head Imam of the Gambia Police Force.

His leadership extended to Friday congregational prayers at the Independence Drive Mosque and as the head Imam of the Fula community nationwide.

His presence graced innumerable religious and official ceremonies, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended. Imam Jallow opened and led prayers in mosques throughout the country from Police Headquarters in Banjul to Kairaba, Kotu, Bundung, Latriya Village, and Stanley Street.

His unwavering service to the Republic of The Gambia earned him honors in both the First and Second Republics, showcasing his commitment and dedication.

At the age of 70, Imam Alhaji Dawda Jallow heeded Allah’s inevitable call at his residence in Police Line, Banjul. His name is forever inscribed in the eternal book of life, and his legacy continues to guide and inspire all who were fortunate to know him.

May the light of the Glorious Qur’an accompany him in Barzaq, provide him shade on the Day of Qiyama, and intercede for him on that fateful Day of Reckoning.

May his soul, along with the souls of all the faithful departed, find eternal peace in the highest chambers of Alijanna Jannah inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Ameen
