Alhaji Ngange Demba Thomas (1940s–2024)
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un!
“An Elephant Fallen On Its Four Feet”
One year has passed since the departure of Alhaji Ngange Demba Thomas, one of the doyens and veterans of Gambian journalism, whose pen carved truth into the conscience of a nation. His absence still echoes across newsrooms, classrooms, and conversations where integrity once had a voice.
Alhaji Ngange Demba Thomas was more than a journalist; he was a literary giant, a fearless truth-seeker, and a mentor to generations.
From the golden age of Gambian media in the 1970s and 1980s, he stood tall among legends, wielding his intellect and pen with unmatched precision. As editor of The Gambian, he championed justice, democratisation, and cultural pride.
His legacy lives on in the journalists he mentored, the stories he told, and the principles he upheld. He taught us that journalism is not just about reporting; it is about responsibility, courage, and giving a voice to the voiceless.
Today, we remember him not with sorrow alone, but with reverence.
May his memory continue to inspire principled storytelling and civic courage.
May Allah grant him Alijannah Firdausi. Ameen.
