The Unite Movement for Change has condemned what it describes as the harassment of journalist Omar P. Jallow, raising concerns over press freedom and political interference in The Gambia.
In a statement, the movement expressed solidarity with Mr Jallow, alleging that he had been intimidated, threatened with dismissal, and pressured into issuing a false public statement.
UNITE claimed the incident reflects a broader attempt to undermine press freedom and institutional independence, arguing that journalists should not face consequences for participating in community activities.
The group linked the matter to a fundraising event in Mr Jallow’s home village, which was attended by Talib Ahmed Bensouda, suggesting that association with certain political figures is being treated as disloyalty.
It further alleged that Seedy Njie was involved in discussions with Mr Jallow regarding his employment status and public statements, describing the actions as an abuse of office.
UNITE also referenced comments previously attributed to Information Minister Ismaila Ceesay, and called for an independent investigation into the roles of officials mentioned.
The movement urged the government to halt what it described as the targeting of individuals linked to opposition figures and called on civil society and media organisations to demand accountability.
It added that protecting journalists and upholding freedom of expression remain essential to democratic governance.
There has been no immediate response from the government or the individuals named in the statement.
