Police in the United States have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal stabbing of 22-year-old Gambian national Ebrima Loppy in Edgewood, Maryland.

According to Baltimore County Police Department, the incident occurred around 4:05 a.m. on Monday in the 1700 block of Edgewood Road.

Officers responding to a call found both the victim and the suspect at the scene.

Loppy had suffered a stab wound to the upper body and was pronounced dead at the location.

Police identified the suspect as Mohammad Jeng. Investigators said Jeng admitted stabbing Loppy in the neck during an argument, claiming self-defence.

Formal charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Authorities said preliminary findings indicate the killing stemmed from a dispute between the two men and posed no ongoing threat to the public.

The incident has shocked local residents, with police temporarily cordoning off the area as investigations got underway.

Community members expressed sympathy for Loppy’s family.
