Yankuba Darboe, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council and a senior official of the United Democratic Party, has alleged widespread irregularities in the ongoing voter registration process, describing the situation in Tanji as “broad daylight fraud.”
Speaking on the ground, Darboe claimed that opposition supporters had uncovered cases involving individuals allegedly attempting to register with questionable documents.
“What is happening in Tanji is a broad daylight fraud that is going on,” he said. “We caught a woman engaging in it and took the matter to the police, but our complaint was not taken seriously.”
He further alleged that local authorities were being pressured and that his team had gathered audio and visual evidence to support their claims.
“We have evidence, including audio recordings, of people being threatened and instructed on what to do,” he said.
Darboe accused security authorities of failing to act on reported cases and warned that his group would remain vigilant at registration centres.
“Anybody who comes with a birth certificate that we don’t accept, we will not wait on the police. We will stop it here,” he added.
He also raised concerns about what he described as selective enforcement, claiming that those reporting alleged fraud were being targeted instead of those accused of wrongdoing.
The allegations come amid heightened political tensions over the voter registration process ahead of upcoming elections.
Authorities, including the Independent Electoral Commission and the Gambia Police Force, have previously maintained that the process is being conducted in line with the law.
No official response has yet been issued regarding Darboe’s latest claims.
